New Research: Goji May Help Prevent Breast Cancer

If you're a regular reader of this health resource, you
already know I'm a big fan of the juice of the Lycium
barbarum plant—better known as goji. It has a wide range
of health-promoting effects.

At the recent San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, researchers
presented a study that revealed exciting new potential for this
long-revered Asian berry.

Researchers are always searching for ways to modulate
hormone levels and metabolism in the quest to find cures
for breast, prostate, ovarian, and other cancers that afflict
the reproductive organs. Hormone-dependent cancers are usually
more aggressive and difficult to treat.

A research team from the Strang Cancer Research Laboratory
at Hackensack University presented a study in San Antonio that
found that extracts of goji inhibited a specific pathway of
estrogen metabolism that is known to encourage the growth of
hormone-dependent breast cancers.

More specifically, women with breast cancer usually have
accelerated C16-alpha hydroxylation of the estrogen in their
bodies. This is a method the body uses to break down extra or
"used-up" estrogen, but it yields a product called 17 beta-
estradiol, also known as E2—a known promoter of breast cancer
growth.

In a test tube-study, the investigators demonstrated that goji
caused human breast cancer cells to down-regulate this pathway
of estrogen metabolism.

This is huge news, and yet another reason to get your goji!

Compared to our record first quarter in 2005, Sales of

How about this statistic: We've sold more bottles of

Another FreeLife distributor reported me for providing too much Health Related Information.

So, I'm in the process of removing all connection between FreeLife and the Health Benefits their products provide.

Quite simply, it's driving me crazy.

I can understand FreeLife's perspective. They don't want to be shut down by a Federal agency who bows to the pharmaceutical industry and because we, as in FreeLife, do not spend millions on clinical research - we can't make health related claims.

Heck, I don't think water - clean, pure, water, could be promoted as having any health related value without being blessed through clinical trial.

And did you know that over 450 people die each year in the U.S. from acetaminophen (Tylenol) poisoning? At least it was approved through clinical testing!

Anyone ever died from drinking too much Goji?

Not unless they drowned or had too much adult related fun (according to some of my customers) - even then, they would go out with a smile. Seems like a nice way to go.

I live in an area of northern Michigan famous for it's cherry orchards and vineyards.

Cherries deliver many health benefits to those who drink the juice or eat the dried berries. The cherry growers want to promote these benefits, but they have the same problem we have, due to clinical trial requirements.

Another Great Goji Testimonial

Check this out...

Last Dec. 3 I fell outside our house. I did not walk for over 10 months. (More on that later).

August 1, 2005 I had a heart attack. My heart was too weak to do a heart cath. The doctors sent me home to die. About 2 weeks later, I went to my family doctor. As a tax preparation specialist for over 20 years, I am always getting asked by clients "How can I increase my tax refund?"

There are very few ways to reduce your taxes that won't cost you more money than you end up saving, and in fact most of them are only tax deferrals. However, there is one thing that I truly believe, and that is everyone in Canada and the U.S.A. should have their own business. This is the best way to legitimately reduce your tax bill.

When you own your own business you can take advantage of tax incentives put out by the government in order to promote small business growth. A lot of the expenses that you currently pay can become tax deductible.

Imagine the feeling that every time you fill your car up with gas, or pay your phone bill, or purchase a meal, etc., you will know that the government is going to refund you a portion of that cost.

So why get started before 2006 comes around?

Here are a few reasons why you should start your own FreeLife business now and not wait until 2006:

Reason #1 - Let's look at the tax breaks.

If you purchase one case of Goji and pay for your business kit, it will cost you approximately $190 U.S or $265 Cnd. This cost is 100% tax deductible, because you have to sample the product before you can become an advocate of it.

As you can see, your cost to get started is lower than your tax refund will be. So the government has funded your start up cost and then some.

I just got back from a fascinating trip to central China. I went to a town called Ningxia (pronounced NING-sha), an autonomous region next to Inner Mongolia.

Ningxia is home to an astonishing number of centegenarians. According to one source, the Chinese National Census has found that the number of residents living in Ningxia who are 100 or better exceeds the national average by 400 percent.

What brought me to Ningxia, you might ask? How did I happen to find myself in the town square, sitting next to the mayor of the city, and hob-nobbing with a woman twice my age? I was there for the Goji Festival held each year in this town that's tiny by Chinese standards (100 Chinese cities contain over a million people, and China as a whole contains four times more people than the United States).

Celebrating The Goji Berry

Every year in Ningxia, the Goji Festival is held for two weeks in the middle of the season during which the berries mature—between June and October. Each Monday during those months, hundreds of pickers show up to relieve the bushes' boughs of their reddish-orange-gold bounty.

What Is Goji?

Also known by their Latin name, Lycium barbarum, goji berries have a long history as food and medicine in Chinese culture. Today, they grow wild and are cultivated primarily at high elevations in areas in and around the Himalayas— the mountains that contain Mt. Everest, the highest peak on Earth.

Pure, mineral-rich soils and pure, abundant waters from the peaks of this mountain range provide ideal growing mediums for more than 18,000 exotic plant species in that part of Asia.

Some 8,000 of the plants unique to the areas in and around the Himalayas are believed to have medicinal value. Ancient Himalayan healers are thought to have provided the foundation for the natural medical practices that today are known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda.

The berries of the goji plant are among the world's most potent superfoods. Like other deeply colored berries—cranberries, blueberries, blackberries——goji is rich in anthocyanins, the purple antioxidant pigment that has been found to support better vision and circulation. Anthocyanins are also believed to help prevent cancer, control diabetes, and slow down age-related reductions in memory and thinking ability. It's no wonder that Chinese folklore calls goji berries "happy berries" — supposedly, eating them causes incessant smiling!

More Of The Science Behind The Promise Of Goji

In peer-reviewed journals, Chinese researchers have published articles testifying to the various benefits of these nutrient-packed berries for the prevention and healing of poor immunity, chronic fatigue, and even the process of cancer development (carcinogenesis). It is one of the most antioxidant-dense foods known, which means that it broadly defends against conditions related to free-radical overload: heart disease, cancer, and premature aging, to name a few.

Ancient Chinese medical texts recommend goji for treatment of "chi deficiency," which manifests itself as low energy, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, and heart palpitations.

Goji contains unique polysaccharides that I like to call "Master Molecules"— complex carbohydrate molecules that are pivotal elements in cellular communication. Asian researchers, often at the forefront of nutritional research, are investigating these molecules intensively.

It contains all 8 essential amino acids, and 11 more for good measure— giving goji berries a higher protein content than whole wheat. Goji is also rich in a rare trace mineral called germanium, which is being aggressively researched as a nutritional weapon against cancer.

In addition, 20 other trace minerals; flavonoids, including the vision- protecting zeaxanthin; beta-carotene (more than in carrots); 500 times more vitamin C per ounce than oranges; and a spectrum of B vitamins grace this berry with their presence. A nutrient called beta-sitosterol, which is anti-inflammatory and a useful treatment for prostate enlargement, is also found in goji berries in appreciable amounts.

Wait, goji has more: a sesquiterpene nutrient called cyperone, helpful to those who suffer from menstrual pain and high blood pressure; an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial compound called solavetivone; and an immunity - boosting compound called physalin, which boosts the activity of natural killer cells (in mouse experiments) and may turn out to help those with leukemia and hepatitis B. Other mouse and test-tube experiments show increases in physical endurance and immunity and decreases in the speed of cancer cell growth.

Test-tube studies found that goji helped counteract heat-induced free-radical damage to sperm-producing machinery—the mechanism believed to damage fertility in men who wear briefs instead of boxers.

People who try goji juice report reduced coffee and sweet cravings and improved ease of weight loss.

Many say that it's such an energizing drink that workouts were made much easier, and that they recovered more quickly from those workouts.

Improvements in mental clarity and alertness—without the jitters that come from caffeine—have also been reported by people who have tried goji juice. Improvements in urinary symptoms from enlarged prostate have also been reported.

The Goji I Recommend—And Use Myself

Science aside, goji is delicious. You can enjoy the berries dried or as a juice—they haven't made it fresh into health food stores in the United States. Choose a juice made from cold-pressed, freshly picked berries. It's the one juice I recommend for children and adults alike.

Over 40 varieties of goji berry grow in Tibet alone, with more species grown in China and in areas in and around the Himalayas. Research using mass spectrometry has found that the most nutrient-dense goji berries come from the lush valleys that run through the Himalayan mountains.

If we are to believe the results of a recent survey by ABC News, USA Today, and the Stanford University Medical Center, pain is a serious problem for American adults. Here are some of the statistics the research team came up with: Half of Americans live with chronic or recurrent pain.

* 4 in 10 people have pain on a regular basis.

* 2 in 10 people who have regular pain report that it is severe.

* 19 percent of Americans suffer from chronic pain—that which lasts for 3 or more months.

* The most common sites of pain are the back (25%), the knee (12%), the head (headache and migraine; 9%), the shoulder/s (7%), and the leg/s (7%).

* 6 of 10 Americans have taken prescription drugs for pain, but only 51 percent report that the medicine worked “very well.” * 8 in 10 pain sufferers report that they have some control over their pain, but only half feel “a lot” of control.

This is particularly problematic in the wake of questions about the safety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including the blockbuster COX-2 drugs Vioxx (removed from the market, then put back with a black-box warning), Bextra (removed from the market), and Celebrex.

People who are in chronic pain are running out of mainstream medical options. Short of miracle, liver-damaging acetaminophen, or powerful, addictive narcotic drugs, what can the average pain sufferer do to return to a reasonable — even joyful — quality of life?

The reports in the media on the potential benefits of moderate
alcohol consumption are quite compelling. It appears to significantly
lower the risk of heart attack, osteoporosis, and mental decline.

On the other hand are reports that the same moderate alcohol
consumption, or consumption that goes beyond moderation, can
increase risk of breast, oral, esophageal, and colon cancers.

Also weighing on the “con” side is the fact that doctors don't
generally advise their patients to start drinking a glass of wine,
a beer, or a shot of whiskey a day if they don't do so already.

If it's so good for our health, why aren't they prescribing it
along with other lifestyle changes like exercise and multivitamins?

What You Need To Know About this
Little-Understood Form Of Natural Medicine

In the late 1700s, German physician Samuel Hahnemann was
looking for an approach to medicine that was less cruel than
that of most of his peers. Purgatives (powerful laxatives),
bloodletting, and emetics (which cause vomiting) were all
standard medical treatments in those days. As he experi-
mented, Hahnemann discovered that taking tiny doses of the
plant from the drug used to treat malaria—quinine—seemed to
cause symptoms of the disease. This was the root of one of
the main beliefs of homeopathy—the “Law of Similars,” where
like cures like.

In other words, a substance that causes certain
symptoms can actually alleviate those symptoms, acting as
a remedy when taken in an extremely diluted form. And the
greater the dilution—sometimes so diluted that no actual
molecules of the “active substance” remain in the remedy—
the more potent it is believed to be.

If this sounds counter-intuitive to you, or even ridiculous,
you’re in excellent company. Many mainstream medical doctors
agree with you. Millions of consumers who use homeopathic
products would strenuously disagree, however. So,
too, would throngs of health-care practitioners—including
M.D.s, nurse-midwives, osteopaths, dentists, veterinarians,
and naturopathic physicians—who regularly prescribe these
remedies and see that they can do a lot of good.
